Balangir, Sept 11: In a horrific incident, a car mowed down three sisters Tuesday evening in Balangir district triggering a 12-hour protest.
The hit & run chaos unfolded when the car mowed down the three sisters in Nunhad village in Belpara tehsil near Patnagarh before hitting an electricity pole. The locals found out after the car hit the pole.
Three victims -- identified as Bholeswari Majhi, Pratima Majhi and Jemanta Majhi -- were then taken to Belpara hospital.
Bholeswari was shifted to Patnagarh hospital after her condition worsened, but the doctors there declared her dead. The other two were reportedly in critical condition and were undergoing treatment.
Police has already detained Sushil Sahu, the driver as well as the owner of the car, in the said hit & run case. Sushil is the owner of a dhaba -- 'Sunshine Hotel'.
Sushil was allegedly in inebriated condition when he committed the crime.
The incident triggered a rage among the angry villagers, who went for a 12-hour protest burning tyres on the highway -- Belpara-Kantabanji road.
The family of the sisters have demanded justice for Bholeswari, while the villagers have demanded compensation for the family.
