Kendrapara, Sep 5: Odisha Police on Thursday busted a bike theft racket in Kendrapara district and arrested six members of the gang. A total of nine stolen two-wheelers were recovered from the accused, police said.

The six accused have been identified as Kanhu Charan Mallik, Gobinda Jena, Rehman Alli Khan, Shaktipada Das, Tinku Bhuyan and Sahadev Jena. All are the residents of Kendrapara district.

Kendrapara DSP Debshis Dhal said the arrests followed a complaint regarding the theft of a bike from the front of the State Bank of India (SBI) here on September 3.

“Based on the complaint, we first arrested prime accused Kanhu Charan Mallik in connection to the bike theft near the SBI here. Further investigation led us to arrest the other five members of the gang,” Dhal said.

A joint team of Kendrapara Town police station and Pattamundai police station arrested the gang members from the different parts of Kendrapara district, he added saying all of them were forwarded to the court.

The gang stole bikes from the different parts of the district and sold them in remote areas at cheaper prices.

“We are also verifying if they are involved in any other cases,” Dhal said.
