5,696 Road Accident Deaths Registered In 2023: Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhusan Jena

Bhubaneswar, Sept 5: As many as 5,696 people lost their lives in road accident in 2023, said a data, revealed by Bibhuti Bhusan Jena, Minister of Commerce, Transport, Steel & Mine.

The Transport Minister Thursday revealed some shocking data in connection with road accidents in the state while answering an unstarred question from BJD MLA Sanatan Mahakud during the ongoing Budget Session of 17th Odisha Legislative Assembly in Bhubaneswar.

According to Bibhuti Bhusan Jena, the state registered 12,052 road accidents in 2023. "Odisha has registered 12,052 road accidents the previous year," said the Transport Minister.

"A total of 5,696 deaths has been registered due to road accidents in the state last year. The number of injured/critically injured reads 10,419 in 2023," added Bibhuti Bhusan Jena.

The Transport Minister, who also holds the Ministry of Commerce, Steel & Mine, also revealed that, among all the districts, Sundargarh has registered the highest number of deaths related to road accidents.

Sundargarh, one of the districts of western Odisha, has registered 448 deaths related to road accidents.

If we consider the last five years -- 2019-23, the number of registered deaths due to road accidents stands at 26,315, while a total of 55,580 road accidents has been registered.
